One of the most important parts of maintaining good health throughout the body is preventive healthcare. This is true from the toes to the teeth. Preventive care in periodontics focuses on dental prophylaxis. Prophylaxis simply means the prevention of disease. In the case of dental prophylaxis, the focus is on thoroughly cleaning the teeth and surrounding tissue. This preventive care is an important part of maintaining good teeth and dental health. It is usually recommended to book a dental prophylaxis appointment twice per year. This can increase to every 3-4 months for patients suffering periodontitis (gum infection).
What to Expect at a Dental Prophylaxis Appointment
A dental prophylaxis appointment is very straightforward and with regular twice per year visits, the appointment should be an easy and predictable experience. For patients with existing gum disease or anxiety, general anesthetic can sometimes be an option offered.
During a dental prophylaxis appointment, you can expect:
The Dentist to review your medical history and take a quick look in your mouth. This step ensures your dentist is aware of any new medications or health changes such as pregnancy or disease. The dentist is also trained to look for any signs of oral cancer.
X-Rays to be Taken. While x-rays are not needed at every appointment, your dentist will usually suggest a set of x-rays occasionally to check for dental issues that might be hidden from the naked eye.
Periodontal Probing. This part of the appointment allows your dentist to measure the depth of your gum tissue with a tool known as a periodontal probe. This is important as gums that pull away from the teeth allow bacteria and food to build up along and under the gum line which can lead to more serious dental issues.
Supragingival and Subgingival Cleaning. After thoroughly reviewing your gums and teeth, the dentist is finally able to conduct the cleaning itself. This process is very thorough and involves cleaning not only the teeth but gum pockets and beneath the gum line.
