They say the gums are the frames of the smile. It is true that they frame the teeth, and depending on how well they do their job, your smile can be bright and balanced or gummy and uneven.
Studies measuring people’s perception of different smiles have found that anything more than three or four millimeters of gum tissue showing is considered less attractive. This “gummy” look can be caused by excess gum tissue, short teeth, or an upper lip that pulls back, showing too much of the gums.
While there is usually nothing medically wrong with a “gummy” smile, it can make some people self-conscious. Thankfully, there is an easy fix – laser gum recontouring.
What is Laser Gum Recontouring?
Gum recontouring is the process of reshaping the gum line to create a more balanced and even smile. In the case of laser gum recontouring, a diode laser is used to quickly remove excess gum tissue with less pain and much less risk than traditional gum contouring.
During the procedure, a powerful but safe laser is used to cut off the excess gum tissue. With the heat of the laser, each cut is also immediately cauterized, leading to less bleeding and a lower risk of infection. With laser gum recontouring, gums also heal much quicker.
